FAQ’s

How do solar panels work?

You’ll have an array of solar PV (photovoltaic) panels that capture the sun’s energy which is then converted into electricity for your home using an inverter. Your home will use this power as you generate it, then you’ll import any extra you need from the grid.

What is the best roof direction for solar panels?

Most UK roofs are angled at between 30 degrees and 45 degrees.  Solar PV panels are not recommended for roofs that face north as you don’t get the full benefit of the system.

The best pitch is between 30 and 40 degrees, although we can install solar PV on other pitches, including flat roofs.

How long does it take to install a system?

Most installations are completed within a couple of days but some of the larger jobs will take a little longer.  We can let you know once we know the size of the system you need.

We’ll put your scaffolding up a few days before your installation and take it down a few days after and we’ll always make sure we leave your property clean and tidy.

How many solar panels do I need?

The number of solar panels required will mainly depend on the roof space available and how much electricity you use.   We need to fully understand your electricity usage so you get the right-sized system for your needs and budget.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Contact your council to see whether you need to apply for planning permission for your solar panels.  You won’t need planning permission for most domestic solar panels, as long as they’re below a certain size.

Is my roof suitable for an install?

There will be an initial assessment of your property to make sure that your roof is suitable before we go ahead with anything.  The great things about solar PV systems is that they can be installed almost anywhere as ling as the roof is structurally sound.

Individual solar panels are not particularly heavy, but a typical (4kWp) solar array, complete with mounting rails can weigh around 250kg.

The Process

The first stage is to survey your property and complete a risk assessment to ensure that everything is safe and suitable.  A detailed plan will be put together and agreed before any works go ahead.  A date of the install will be agreed.

The second stage is for scaffolding to be securely put up against your property to allow us to complete the full install.  This will generally be done a few days before the install.  We will then begin to mark out where the solar panels will go.

The install will then take place as part of the third stage and the roof hooks will be installed ready for the railing to be fitted.  We will take perfect care to ensure that the bars are parallel.  Once the railing is installed the solar panels will then be installed.  The panels are already wired by the manufacturer so connecting them is fairly straightforward.  How we connect the panels depends on the system’s voltage, amperage and power, as well as the position of the panels and any shading on the roof.  The wires connecting the panels are then kept off the roof tiles by attaching the cables to the rails the panels are clamped to.

Finally we will ensure that all the cabling is neatly fitted to suit your home and we will leave the place clean and tidy before we go.
